Effective Use of Biological Safety Cabinets

Prevent contamination of your products! Learn how to use Class II Biological Safety Cabinets (BSCs) effectively. Theatrical smoke demonstrations will illustrate airflow in the cabinet and the effects of proper and improper work techniques.

In this presentation, participants will learn:

  • How BSCs differ from other laboratory ventilation equipment
  • How a BSC's motor blower and HEPA filter provide protection
  • Steps to take when preparing to work in the BSC
  • Techniques for working safely and effectively in the BSC
  • How and when to clean the BSC
  • How BSCs are tested to ensure they are working as designed

For the past 20 years Mary Ann Sondrini has been the Executive Director of the Eagleson Institute, a nonprofit foundation with a mission to promote the principles and practices of laboratory safety. To carry out this mission the Eagleson Institute offers seminars and conferences, awards scholarships, sponsors lectures and produces web-based software and videos including a new DVD, " Effective Use of Class II Biological Safety Cabinets." Mary Ann holds a BA in Biology from Williams College and a Masters in Education from Harvard University. Prior to her years at the Eagleson Institute she worked in a research laboratory at Yale University.
